Diskwarrior to the Rescue?

October 19th, 2005
My recreation of the sad mac icon

So I suffered a really bad crash. My hard drive appears to have become stuck in some sort of loop. Even Diskwarrior might not be able to save it. Must stop typing update post later…

OK this is what happend. I had just finished my fifth article on search engine optimization. I was in the process of telling Andrew Kuo about it via email. I was also brainstorming questions for the Baidu interview as well as other stuff. When my computer started to slow down.

The hard drive kept making the same sound over and over. Finally I hard resetted. I could do nothing else. After a while I got a grey screen with a folder. Inside the folder icon it alternated from the Mac face to a question mark. This was bad. I have never seen this before. I had to hard reset again. This time I put Diskwarrior in. Diskwarrior was able to start up but it couldn’t find a hard drive! So I rebooted again. This time the machine started up but it was painfully slow. Scarily my computer (hard drive) seemed to work better when it was tipped on its’ side a bit. So I put one finger under the back left corner. It still works better that way. There is something wrong with the drive mechanism.

To get it to stop whiring last night I had to yank the battery, it wouldn’t go to sleep.

Even an updated Diskwarrior CD I made could do nothing. In fact I couldn’t boot off the updated Diskwarrior CD. Maybe I didn’t read the documentation carefully enough. I’m just glad it works at all. I was able to back up Documents, Sites, Pictures, Mail and Mailboxes on my iPod. I’m not going to touch it again until I get to the Apple repair depot.

  • Things are still very bad over in Macintosh land. I’ve updated my copy of Discwarrior, but I’m still planning to take it in to the Beijing Applecare service center tomorrow. I’m making this post from Danna‘s Thankpad.

Also on Danna’s thinkpad I noticed my sidebar is way down at the bottom of the screen. This might be due to the picture of myself I added. Once I get my Mac fixed I’ll have to sit side by side and fix my Theme. I need to sit side by side with a windows machine to make sure the theme looks like intended, this was something I was always going to do on Danna’s laptop but never found the time for…

  • Well I’m really wasting time tonight. I think I’ve installed like my fourth or fifth WordPress plugin. Now it appears I may have Gravatars working on Muskblog who-ee who-ee!
