[...] Next up was Tom Osha who would tell you everything you ever wanted to know about Old Dominion University and more. He was a nice guy I talked to him before breakfast and then he sat at my table, I had gotten their early and strategically chosen a great table from which to watch the presentations. I was a bit disappointed that some audience members were talking during the start of his presentation. He talked about university relationships, public-private partnerships, commercializing research, concepts of that nature. I couldn’t help but recall the presentation I attended on the Tsinghua Science Park. [...]

[...] I added a residual value calculation to my original and simplest spreadsheet. It only considers yearly income rather than monthly which is what I did in my two later spreadsheets. Although I have blogged about venture capital in China and elsewhere, I’m far from an expert don’t let the MBA and BSc. fool you. There are some excellent blogs which are written by real successful venture capitalists or people more knowledgeable and connected than I: [...]

[...] I’ve been meaning for a while to write about a talk I attended a couple of weeks ago. The topic was venture capital and new company creation in China. Muskie has written about it in more detail than I can, so I’ll just point you there. I was dubious about the VC’s propostion: they rent out office space in the Tsinghua Scince Park, and are quite explicit that rents there are much higher than in comparable office buildings nearby. They justify this by saying that the Tsinghua name adds value, and that they -the VCs - add extra value through ‘connections’. Maybe - but if I was a struggling, undercapitalised entrepreneur, I know I would like to see something concrete to back this assertion up before I set up shop. You know, figures of some sort to quantify this ‘added value”….. [...]
