[...] I’m still looking for a position that fits a little better with my two degrees, Computer Science and Business Administration. Maybe I should just give in to the relentless pressure and become a fulltime English teacher again… That wouldn’t solve my upcoming visa problems nor pay off my debt promptly. [...]

[...] I’ve had to do without my Mac twice now. I already knew this, but some people haven’t grasped it yet so it bears repeating, “You don’t know a good thing, until it is gone.” My Mac is my primary means of keeping in touch with friends and family. I was using it to look for a job. I managed my contacts, played my music, tuned my guitar with it. Not to mention I’m a full time MBA student and I used it to write my papers. All study materials are digital now. I couldn’t download cases or get sample exam questions because that is all online too. It was my only Chinese to English dictionary… Not to mention the death of my hard drive, after I told Apple and took it in already almost caused me to fail a class because my term paper went astray… [...]

  • http://blog.muschamp.ca/?p=191 Muskblog » Blog Archive » Staying in China Longer

[...] Even though I haven’t left China and am in fact staying longer, I’ve still been asked several times by several people when I’m coming back. My standard answer is it all depends on finding a job. If Chi-Wei or even better 金兰 方 is reading this I’ve been mostly looking for positions related to marketing, MIS/IT, and Venture Capital though I occasionally consider other positions. I’ve been mostly looking for work in the following cities: Vancouver, Seattle, and Beijing. However once again I’ve applied to jobs both further East in North America (Toronto and Chicago) and I’ve even looked a little at other cities in Asia such as Shanghai or Hong Kong. [...]

[...] Although I do need a job and I have the expertise to set up such a website and the domain http://www.jianmei.com is available… but I don’t want adult webmaster to be my next job title. And although many people do come to my blog looking for pictures (presume ably) of the calves of Asian women, how large this market is I don’t know. Large enough to cover the cost of hosting and domain registration undoubtedly. Large enough to derive a good income from a website devoted exclusively to pictures of Asian women I don’t know. [...]

  • http://blog.muschamp.ca/2006/01/15/looking-for-a-job-online/ Muskblog » Blog Archive » Looking for a job online

[...] Most companies now direct jobseakers to their own website or to a specific third party who runs their online job application system. As I’ve previously mentioned I’ve helped develop an online job application program which was cleverly titled OJAP but it ran out of funding at some point and I’m not sure if it was ever deployed. So in addition to being an active, educated jobseeker I also have additional insight into what works and does not. Some companies like Apple have good internal job sites while others such as one of the big five Canadian banks have extremely crappy ones. [...]

[...] I’m still looking for a job. Lately I’ve been having considerable success finding some openings in Vancouver using T-Net British Columbia which redirects you to a companies own career site. Though I think the surprise quiz that HSBC hatched upon me after I had already created my resume and written a cover letter was pushing it. Applying for a job online is not easier. The job searcher is being compelled to give over more and more information before they even come near a real person. [...]

[...] I just went and turned on our Christmas lights. I had only put them up the night before which was clear but cold. It is starting to get windy and our walkway has iced over. My mom is watching the news instead of the football, I don’t know how long I’ll have power. That is one of the reasons I haven’t put up the pictures I took during previous storms. The loss of power, internet access, even telephone service frequently hasn’t helped my job search which has been a spectacular failure. [...]

[...] Then there is the whole theme of being careful what you say in electronic media, especially publically online. I’m pretty sure Dalton Ross didn’t want certain information to end up on his blog, or the Apple Blog, or my blog. And Susan P. may regret her actions someday. Dalton at least appears to have a job (unlike some people I know) and is trying to get his finances in order. People deserve a second chance in life. [...]

[...] The 1% patch symbolizes the one percent of people who actively influence the majority for everything from fashion, music, politics, to what blogs to read. ;-) I could cite examples where my writings and even my web design and what plugins I use influenced others. I’ve also convinced people to use the Opera browser, WordPress, Macs… a lot of technology really, both online and offline. Recently a recruiter encouraged me to become a technology evangelist, a real evangelist, not just a citizen marketer. I dutifully found such a position with one of my favourite technology companies, they sent me a questionnaire with 16 questions, which I answered. Now I wait. Enough about my job search. [...]

[...] I’m still unemployed. I had an interview, which didn’t go horrible, for a good job at a good firm last week. But it appears I may not be called back for the next round. I really don’t like it when people just ignore you and pretend you don’t exist. Maybe that isn’t the case here, maybe the timeline got screwed up, but for some jobs I’ve definitely been less than satisfied with the experience, enough that I would stay away from that company and tell others to do so too. [...] The other recent article is an interview with one of the more infamous Vancouver area bloggers Raul Pacheco who is better known by his online handle @hummingbird604. Given I’ve maintained a webpage online longer than most corporations, have various degrees, and experience creating websites, web applications, and managing social media and communications you’d think I could parlay that into a job, but I haven’t even had any interviews lately so when there is big news about Vancouver, blogging, and how search engines are giving greater priority to the timely postings of individuals, to such an extent that corporations and PR agencies are taking notice and reaching out to bloggers, I have to ask what about me? [...]
