Humorous Irony

Perhaps no one else will find this funny but the other day when it arrived in the mail I realized I subscribe to two music magazines Magnet and No Depression.

I haven’t really had the time to read them for the last few months. I’ve been trying to read material that will help me with my job search. They are piling up on my desk unread. I even wrote my first ever book review, though I think the shorter, less rambling version I posted in the Marketing Profs Book Club is an improvement over the original. I tend to ramble and write stream of conscious, I need to edit myself more ruthlessly. I’m too used to writing people who know me, or I thought knew me.

Hopefully someone will appreciate this post, too often I feel I’m writing to no one now. I like to think I’m writing to someone, that they are listening, and someday we’ll get a chance to talk again.

People used to appreciate my sense of humor, my irony, even my sarcasm and hyperbole. Some still must, because people read the crap I write. I got a letter in the mail which started out:

    Are you depressed?

Well certainly not since you subscribe to No Depression. But we are sad to report that the March/April issue is your last and your “condition” is in peril.

Won’t you take a few moments to ensure your mental health and welfare and renew your subscription before it slips your mind?

That’s how it goes with the emphasis and bold text. Not wanting to endanger my mental health and welfare further I decided to subscribe, it was only twenty six bucks. I have to think of my mental health and welfare.

Magnet is still my favourite music magazine, but I listen to a lot of blues or roots music or Americana or alt.country or my personal favourite label y’all ternative or however you spell it. I like singer/songwriters and No Depression covers this twangier, roots-ier sound well. They also cover some country and traditional music I’m not as interested in. Magnet likes singer/songwriters like Elliot Smith and I think Steve Earle has been on the cover of Magnet too. Magnet editorial staff and writers are always referencing Neil Young which I find an endearing trait, of course they also seem to love Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices a little too much in my opinion.

Here is another quotation from a song I love, to annoy and confound:

I heard there was a secret chord,
That David played and it pleased the lord.
But you don’t really care for music do yah?
