Advice on Blogging in China

October 6th, 2005
China

Since I am blogging in China, just what you are allowed to blog about has become an interest of mine. Those that know me, may recall I’m somewhat liberal, value honesty and integrity and am generally a nice guy. As a result I’m kinda in favour of free speech and stuff like that. I once refused to sign a lease in Victoria BC as it forbade the holding of political party meetings, which is against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

But I degress, as a blogger in China, although I don’t have a drop of Asian blood in me, (or do I?) I may be operating under the same rules as Chinese bloggers, which are a bit more restrictive than the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or America’s Bill of Rights. Specifically there are 11 things I can not blog about.

Don’t expect me to press my luck.

Update November 2015

I’m back blogging in China and have been for about ten months. I recently came across an article on the demise of Weibo and blogosphere in China. Basically if you post something critical of the government and it gets shared more than 500 times they can arrest you. So once again don’t expect me to press my luck, I’ve already learned the hard way about the dangers of telling the truth.
